Average Contrabass trombone mouthpiece size?

Post by PaulDlrmusic »

Hello! I’ve been playing contra a bit lately and it got me thinking. What is the average contra mouthpiece rim diameter that everyone is playing on? I currently play on a Bach 30CB. It has a 30mm rim. I’ve been told this large by one person and small by another. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

Most contrabass trombone mouthpieces fall in the range 29mm-31mm.

Thanks for the general mouthpiece info. Do you play contra? If so what rim are you playing on?

I do the same. I tried the 116 size - 29.5 mm - but found the 118 works better for me for the shole range.

I use a Greg Black CB (I think it is 30mm or 30.5 mm).

My CB 118, 119, and 120 rims all seem to work well. 119 is probably the most popular. My L, M, and N cups, depending the sound you want.

Years ago I had a contra , for a while.
I played it with a Marcinkiewicz 105 , inner rim about 29,4 mm. Great mpc !

You are all awesome! Thanks for All the input. I was worried I might be going in the wrong direction with mouthpiece choice. I think I might experiment with something smaller. Overall I’m pretty happy with the current piece.

I play a Thein "Ben van Dijk" model contra and use one of three mouthpieces, depending on the section and the repertoire. I have a Tilz KB1 (29mm), Tilz KB2 (30mm), Thein MCH (31mm). I tend to use the Tilz KB2 for most applications.

I have in my collection of mouthpieces a Marcinkiewicz 107, contra mouthpiece (30.15mm cup diameter) which I was given many years ago. It is in as new condition and I am keeping it in case someone gives me a Contrabass trombone!
I also have a DE LB116wM8 which came with a bass trombone I bought some years ago. It is too big for a bass trombone for me, so I keep that for when I get the Contra (see above)
They do get the occasional use when there is a tuba part in the big band and no bass trombone part.

Cheers
