Bass Trombone Mouthpiece question

I`m in search of some information.
I`ve been doubling Bass Trombone more lately and my go to mouthpiece is a Schilke 58.
I have a 59 for those occasions when everything seems like it`s in the Basement.
So here`s my question. I like the sound and control I have with the 58 but...
I`d like just a little wider rim
What`s out there with other mouthpiece companies that is in that 58/ 1 1/2G size range with a wider rim?

Doug Elliott LB 112 (or 110) J with J8 shank.

Most of the commercial 58 sized pieces seem to come with the same sized rim as the 58 (or Bach 1½ G).

Check out Ferguson’s Minick copies. Ferguson V is 1.5-sized.

Probably my 750, but my rims are wider and super comfortable.

The Bob Reeves - Mr Bass mouthpiece is right in this in between zone I think you're looking for. 58ish size with a fatter rim.

With the exception of LIBrass, I’ve tried mpcs from all the above makers. All have rims that are MUCH more comfortable than Schilke’s rims (to me).

Greg Black’s rims are also wide and comfortable. His mpcs run large compared to a Bach size, so a Greg Black size 2 might be a similar rim “feel” compared to a Schilke 58.

If I were looking at Doug Elliott’s mpcs (which I highly recommend), I think a 110 rim size is closer to a Schilke 58. However, (a) it depends on feel, not specs; (b) talk with Doug.

I have only one 58 in my collection, an old "long shank" one, and it measures 1.07"
I have no idea how that compares to older or newer samples.

That makes a very large jump in size to a 59. Just like 1-1/2G to 1-1/4G.

For what it's worth, my Schilke 58 Cup I.D. measures ~27.20mm (1.07"); my Schilke 59: ~28.00mm (1.10").
They may vary from sample to sample.

I find Doug Elliott's rims to be comfortable, but we all have different faces and different preferences.

dukesboneman: when you say "wider rim" do you mean larger Cup I.D., or "thicker" rim (greater distance between Rim O.D. and I.D.)?

Well that clears it right up...

If you are talking about a wider rim surface, I can make wide versions of any of my rims. For the MB series I don't normally stock them, but I can make them if you'd like to try that.

These are some of the mouthpieces I have on hand. The ID dims are a little sketchy just because of the nature of the parts, but I tried to be consistent in how I took the measurements.

Ferguson V - 1.562/1.071 = 0.2455
Ferguson L - 1.629/1.085 = 0.272
DE LB MW112 - 1.582/1.104 = 0.239
DE EUPH 104 - 1.562/1.007 = 0.277
VB 1 1/4G - 1.555/1.083 = 0.236
VB 2G - 1.555/1.053 = 0.251
Schilke 59 - 1.551/1.095 = 0.228
Yamaha 60L - 1.548/1.101 = 0.223

The calculated rim width is = (OD-ID)/2

So the DE Euph rim is widest (although it's also the smallest ID), followed by the Ferguson L (1 1/4 size). Both Ferguson mouthpieces are great, but I only use them when I need more treble bite in the sound. DE has several rim widths, and this one had no width marking, so its probably medium. The MW is Medium Wide. I don't pay much attention to rim width, although most of my DE rims are narrow.

I played a schilke 59 for a while but like you found the rim to just be too thin. I switch to a hammond 20bl and haven't looked back. My understanding is hammond used to work for schilke and is mouthpieces are pretty similar in to the schilke mouthpieces but much imporved imo. I believe a hammond 19bl is about equivalent to a 58.

If you’re still exploring Pickett……their # 2 is in the same range as a Schilke 58. Their published specs are always a bit larger than how the piece feels to a lot of folks. The rims are definitely wider than a Schilke.

Sorry to dredge this back up. In addition to what's been mentioned so far, I have to offer 2 contributions I've enjoyed in the Schilke 58 size range:

Both have served me very well in different settings and have extremely comfortable rims.
