The Shadow Of Your Smile

Post by tbdana »

Another one that was never going to see the light of day until four people told me they like it. FWIW, this is my version of The Shadow Of Your Smile, and is a tribute to trombonist, Dick Nash. While Dick played this tune as a ballad, I do it in a cool Afro-Cuban groove.

This recording would not be possible without the help of all the wonderful professional musicians who gave their time and talents to this effort.

Dana Douglas -- Trombone
Jacam Manricks - Flute, Arranger
Elizabeth McAllister - Clarinet
Joe Gilman - Piano
Benjamin Kopf - Bass
Tim Metz - Drums
Emma McAllister - Violin
Jina Chen - Violin
Theresa Douglas - Inspiration/Muse/Hospitality/Co-Producer
Peter de Leon - Engineer

Recorded at The Track Shack 2024.

Why wouldn't anybody like that? You sound great, and everybody else on that recording too.
Nice artwork at the beginning and end.

How about recording Oblivion? You could play circles around all of the players (big names) recordings in that thread.

Very nice.

The multi-tracked strings are a nice orchestrational touch.

I love your delicate approach and light tonguing. Simply divine.

Thanks, Doug. But I don't think anyone could do a better job on Oblivion than Peter Steiner did. In fact, I haven't played that piece yet precisely because I'd have to figure out a way to play it that is different than Peter but just as good, and I haven't found that yet. That's why I started that thread on the piece, in fact. I think when you get to a certain level of performance there's no such thing as "better," there is only "different," and Peter's interpretation reaches that level.

But I do love that piece, and it's right up my alley. So I might do it if I can make it my own somehow. :)

Sounds great, Dana! I too would love to hear what you do with Oblivion, or anything else for that matter.

Thank you for saying you liked the arrangement. That made me :) .

I was insecure about the arrangement, with the Afro-Cuban groove and the need for a big string section without the money to hire a bunch of players. So I hired two violinists, and they multi-tracked. Then the engineer added reverb to make it sound like a bigger section. I wasn't sure how it would come out. (The flutes and clarinets are also multi-tracked.)

All the musicians who have helped are just wonderful. Great players, and more importantly, great people. So your comment is hugely appreciated! :good:

Props to your engineer, too. :good:

I've seen more than enough recordings with great potential that have been sucked into the void because of an engineer who did weird things, or just didn't know enough about how to deliver.

Excellent! Dittos to all the above, I am sure Dick is honored for the tribute. You played great and I could hear the Dick Nash touches in both the melody and ad lib. Kudos to the very tasty piano work as well.

That's some quality trombone playing Dana ,and I love how you made it your own .what a great tribute.i really like your Side 1 four tunes upload on Utube .I'm looking forward to hearing side two when you finish your project. Are you going to include Urbie Green in your tribute recordings ,I've always loved his sound.im hoping you will put them all on a cd when you have finished. Another player I really like is Ryan Haines,I've managed to track down 4 of his CDs and play them constantly in my car ,I think you both haves the same sound qualities, technique and range .I have a question if it's not to personal,I read that you gave up over 31 years ago ,the morning after a Tonight show gig. Is there any reason why after being such a fabulous performer and professiona gigging l player? Anyway whatever reason I'm certainly glad you are back playing again and sharing your inspirational trombone playing with us. I've started working on the Marshall Gilkes Utube daily routine now ,it's certainly a great workout although I'm struggling keeping up with the scales and range lol 😂 All the best from the UK
