What equipment did Dick Shearer play?

Post by imsevimse »

Hello! Anyone know what Dick Shearer played in the Stan Kenton band? On recordings his sound projects like hell.

When he was in Detroit in the late 70's early 80's he played Kings. I think it was a 2B.

Thank's everyone. His leadplaying is really strong. Just wondering what equipment he preffered to support that style.

<lol> One of my profs in school idolized Shearer and Kenton, and subbed for Shearer during one Kenton tour. Shearer's way of playing did seem a bit harsh on recordings. Has anyone had a look at his method book, "Method of Obtaining Trombone Excellence?" I think it is being marketed by his family.

Does anyone see parallels between Shearer and Matt Neiss?

Yes! …saw The Capital Bones Big Band do “A Stan Kenton Christmas” live at Blues Alley in DC. Killer performance!!!

Highly recommend the CD, too.

Anecdote: While living in SoCal as a teenager, listening to Dick Shearer’s playing made me switch from clarinet to trombone. “Live at Redlands” and “Kenton ‘76” were particularly inspiring! A decade later, through no particular planning on my part - just coincidence, I ended up playing under Hank Levy and got to play many of those same tunes…and hear all the stories first-hand. Forever grateful.
