Hi everybody. My name is Alvaro and this is my first post.

Well, I'm not a trombone player Image. I'm a bassist (electric and upright) who loves the slide trombone, but never took the time to learn how to play it. I had my first and last lesson when I was twenty, playing loong low Bbs in the first position. Unfortunately, I wore braces at the time and the next day the pain made me desist. Maybe some day I'll give it a try again, just for fun.

I have plenty of experience transcribing music for horn sections. I've played with tropical music bands from the beginning of my career (although I'm a rocker at heart) and deeply got into adding new tunes to the band's repertoire by transcribing all sorts of tropical songs. I particularly enjoy transcribing Salsa songs, and three or four-trombone Salsa bands are the best for me.

I'm proud to tell that I'm the one who introduced Christian Lindberg to the whole trombone community in my town. Nobody here knew about him, and I was fortunate enough to catch him on a late night TV broadcast playing the reduction of the Motorbike Concerto "A Short Ride On A Motorbike" and it was a huge impact for me. I consider myself the biggest non-trombonist Lindberg fan in the world, although I still have lots of stuff to hear from him. Again, I can tell for sure that nobody ever heard about him in my town until I got my Lindberg CDs "The Virtuoso Trombone" and "Trombone Odyssey" around 1994.

I joined this forum specifically because I want to share and hear opinions about a trombone-related work I've just done (New thread on that coming soon), but anyway I hope to keep coming to learn about one of my favorite musical instruments, at least in theory.  Image

Hi everyone!  Image

I'm a second generation trombone player that lost his way (and his horn) about ten years ago.  The urge to pick up and start playing again has recently started and it doesn't seem to want to go away.

I played for about 8 years from late elementary school until I was in boot camp in Chicago.  I was very big into jazz, but also played concert, pep band, and marched.  Once I got into my first military school, I found that I didn't have the time to dedicate to anything other than learning.  Time passed and I found myself more and more distant from the urges.  Before I knew it, they were all but gone.

Recently I started listening to jazz again as background music while reading, and found myself listening to the music more than reading the words on the pages in front of me.  I started digging around on Itunes for some of my old favorites (Count Basie Orchestra and J.J. Johnson mainly), and I realized how much I really missed playing.

In the course of looking around for horns, I came across the website and found a ton of great information here.  So, I decided to make an account and join in on all the fun.

I'm in the process of looking for a small/medium bore jazz horn.  Hopefully I can find one that fits me soon and I'll be back to playing again.

Cheers!

Hello Brad, and welcome.

You will find a lot of us who had to stop playing for anywhere from a few months to a few decades and then start back.  The common thread about us returnees is we all can't imagine why we stopped.

You will find lots of fellow travelers who play in Jazz bands ranging from Dixieland (Scott Bentall, RedHotMama, and me) to Swing bands to full Stage Bands.  Styles of all types.  We have some famous people dropping in from time to time.  Robin Eubanks has his own "thread" and we can hero worship and also follow what he's doing.  Plus Josh Roseman, Scott Bentall, Alex Iles, Mike Suter, and the list goes on and on.

Come in, sit down, and learn.

Hi.  My name's Mark.  I have recently picked up my trombone after a break of 22 years!  I played as a teenager reaching grade 8 and playing in the Essex Youth Orchestra and Youth Jazz Orchestra.  I have joined an orchestra for late starters and returners and have just started having some lessons.  It's all coming back very slowly but I'm having fun which is the main thing.  Any tips for strengthening my embouchure will be gratefully received!!

I'm a software engineer who's been traveling about the country on various contracts. My primary instrument is the cello, but a friend at my previous contract in MA loaned me one of her old beater trombones. Although I've wanted for decades to learn the bone, I figured I should use the time to work on being a better cellist. When opportunity knocked, though, I answered, and now I'm hooked. Someone gave me his beat-up old Silvertone (older than me!) and I took a few lessons before leaving MA. Now I"m in the Fullerton, CA area, looking for a teacher. Nobody at Cal State F'ton has gotten back to me, so if anybody on this board is local, or can recommend a local teacher, I'd appreciate it.

Actually, Play_Louder is a violist but he's still part of the Wire Choir.

Lance, get in touch with Forum Member John Sandhagen.  He is at Cal Poly and runs a repair operation there.  We have lots of great players and teachers in the LA area and I hope John or someone else there can make recommendations.

Alex Iles, who is a regular player in the motion picture studios, is a regular poster here.  He goes under the name LX.  Maybe you can contact him as well.

Good luck.

Yeah.  You can still use your alto clef skills on trombone! Image

My thought exactly...but are alto trombones that common? I know the Air Force Band back in MA has one, but don't know how many lesser groups could be expected to have one.

Plenty of tenor trombone parts (usually 1st, occasionally 2nd, sometimes even bass) are written in alto clef.  Some of the parts are appropriately played on alto trombones, but not usually.  (Some of those parts actually ARE played on alto trombones in various groups.  The 1st trombone player in the community orchestra I play in uses an alto occasionally.)  So your alto clef skills will do you in good stead in orchestras.

Ahh, another veteran of the Air Force Band of Liberty (formerly of Pease AF Base in NH and currently of Hanscom AF Base in Mass.)?

I have a bunch of your former colleagues playing with me in various groups.  Many are now part of the Air National Guard Band on Cape Cod.

Back on topic, alto clef is common, but there is usually no need to use an alto trombone.  Case in point: I just did Brahms 1st Symphony last Sunday.  The 1st part is labeled "Trombone Alt" and is written in alto clef, but the part doesn't go above A  Image Image and can easily be played by any competent tenor player on a tenor.

I'm not with the AFBOL, but my teacher retired from same after 26 years. I wasn't aware they were at Pease, but yes--they're at Hanscom now. I worked at Lincoln Lab and so was already on base at lesson time. At one point, the gate inside the lab beeped, having detected my horn case and assuming it to be a person trying to tailgate in. "Aren't these things set to detect trombones?" I asked, but the security folks ignored me.

I took one lesson from a young guy in the BOL and he mentioned the alto that the band had bought, I think for a Renaissance brass ensemble.

Speaking of competent tenor players: forgive the dumb question, but what's the average time it takes to develop the embouchure for high notes? I can usually hit F above the bass staff, and even a G if I don't care what it sounds like, but I know that's still kind of low. I've only been at this for 6 weeks, but my enthusiasm's still high and impatience is kicking in.

Uh, oh!  Another candidate for Mouthpiece Acquisition Mania Image

Most beginners can't go much above G for the first couple of years.  Part of it is that they are still young, part of it is because they won't practice, and part of it is because you need to develop your embouchure.  Were you born knowing how to hold the cello bow? Image

There are exercises that can help you build your upper register.  When you start taking lessons again, your teacher can probably give you some stuff that will help you get higher pretty fast; at least up to the Bb above that G.  From there it takes a lot of hard work.

We have a lot of younger players here who also don't want to work for their range and they start buying mouthpieces.  A 12C helps the upper register (because it is smaller; sorta like using a half-haired bow to play piano) but then they can't play the low notes so good.  So now they get a 3G for the low notes.  Now you are swapping out mouthpieces for every phrase and your embouchure has no clue what to do.

I probably don't have to preach to you that you need a good teacher or coach to learn.  Lots of guys out there in LA-LA land; you should be able to get someone to work with you.  Maybe ask Ralph Sauer; he's not as busy any more Image

It's funny how trombone-mad I've gotten. As previously posted, I put off doing anything for decades, but now that I've dipped my toes into the [s]drool [/s]water, I want more, more, more! I know it takes practice, but I can wait; any time in the next 5 minutes will be fine.

As for mouthpieces, I was told to get a Bach 6.5 AL, which I did. I bought another one (a 4, I think?) because it was in the "used" pile, and there's the one that came with the horn, but I've been using the 6.5 only.

Hey! Tenor clef, unlisted but available! Image It's me.

Hey everyone,

Well I'm new, in a way. I was a part of the old otj forum probably about 2 years ago or so when I was looking to get a new trombone and find out info on it. I found out that the site was moved, however I couldn't seem to remember any of my account information Image So I made a new one haha Image  Well its nice to be back on here again and see all the fellow trombonists.  Image

How do you make it so your signature is attached?

Welcome back, Andrew.

If you haven't been here for a while, we did a purge of all accounts that had not logged in for 2 years and your old information may be gone anyway.  Don't worry about it; we like you as you are. Image

If you go to the Profile tab under User Center you will find your profile.  There are options to change your profile information and one of the options is "signature".  Whatever text you put in your signature is placed at the bottom of every post.

Good luck.

I joined a few days ago and have been pretty active on this site. I am in high school and mainly a tenor trombonist. My horns are in my signature. I play bass trombone for my local orchestra, but I am performing the David concertino in April on tenor with orchestra accompaniment. I spend most of my free time practicing. I play 1st trombone in my local trombone ensemble. I am currently searching for a teacher in my area. I live about an hour north of Tampa, Florida. I commit to practicing 4 hours a day at the least and its frustratiing not having someone there to tell me what I am doing wrong. I am happy to be a member and and hoping to learn from the other members and offer what advice I can give.

Just noticed this was here, thought it'd be rude of me not to formally introduce myself;
My name is Zac Lee, I am a professional musician (Trombone and Euphonium/ Keyboards) and composer/arranger.  I am currently playing a cruise ship gig in Hawai'i.  I play mostly jazz and "commercial" music although my current gig involves playing a fair amount of film cues (?) and other pseudo-classical stuff.
I am currently working on music for a few albums worth of original music: a big band project that i am using for an audidtion for the Gil Evans Fellowship (if the rumored collapse of IAJE doesn't kill it) and a few smaller projects that i hope to have finished in the next year or so (A dectet project tentatively called "RedEarth", a 7-8 piece called "Vicious Poindexter" and my own self-titled quintet.)
I have a myspace site if anyone is interested in checking out some previous recordings.  They aren't altogether finished and my playing on some of them isn't too great because i made the mistake of quitting for two years to play piano.  But they'll give you an idea of what we're working on... if you're interested.  It's not everybody's cup of tea.

  http://www.myspace.com/viciouspoindexter

anyway, i love the forum and would spend more time on if i didn't have to spend 10 cents a minute while at sea.  i honestly didn't think there were this many other tortured souls out there.

keep playing, but give me all of your Williams' Image

Hello everyone, just thought I would introduce myself as many others have and also thank everyone who is responsible for this site.  My name is Bryan (Mojon will do) and like so many other stories here, i am making my trombone return after a lengthy time away.  I have a twin brother who is also in the same predicament as myself, in fact he is the one i can thank for this return to music!  At 31 years of age and not having touched a horn since 17, I was at first skeptical of how this was all going to take place.  Having sold my Conn 88H while in some hard times in life, I was left with only a student model, which was stored at my brother's house.  He came across his trumpet, mentioned the idea to me of a comeback, and we were off to the races!  Never having lost my love for music, i picked up the bass for a few years while i was away from the 'bone, even dabbled in some writing/composing on the piano for a bit, but it was always about the 'bone.  My horn arrived earlier this week and I'm already looking for a pro model, I'm not looking back this time!  Again thanks for the site and all the fantastic info and stories, I have thoroughly enjoyed it! hi! Image i'm brandon. just another smart aleck teenage trombonist. the weird thing is is that that my favorite trombone i own is an old, terribly dented, about to fall apart bass trombone. i got it, started using it, fell in love with it, and a week later my parents got a shiny new alto? (or tenor, or something without the tubing my bass has). but seeing as i already had a trombone, and they hadn't given me the alto, they kept it for a year and tried to sell it. didn't work.seeing as it was just collecting dust, they handed it over and i use it occaisonally. hoo-ray! i'm also very active in my school's band, concert band, jazz band, marching band, and currently  Image SUMMER BAND!!! Image today was the first day, but i did it last year, and forgot everything.

My name is Brian Finigan, from New Orleans and New England and now living in New Mexico and playing Western Swing with the Curio Cowboys from Albuquerque. I've been in NM since the 1st of April and am always looking to meet trombonists and other musicians because I want to form a New Orleans style (jazz) brass band with a southwest flavor-sort of a combination of gumbo and burritos with mucho salsa and lots of Louisiana Hot Sauce. Anyone in NM who would like to swing into this hot mix is welcome to contact me and we'll get together somewhere in the shade. I need 2 trombones, 2 cornets, 2 reeds, bass drum, snare drum and bass horn, more or less. I want a N.O. beat with southwestern repertoire which would include western swing and Latin-American tunes.

We actually have several religion posts, most of which started when somebody decided to inject Creation Science into a discussion that might or might not have had some reference to Evolution.  Plus we have the "genuine" Religion topic that has been burning for several years.

Seems nothing generates heated discussion like Religion or Politics.  And you'll see both being flogged to death.  Eventually you will learn the various players here; the liberals and the conservatives; the Jesus Freaks and the atheists (and several degrees in between).

If you want to indulge in the mud fight, by all means have fun.  If you don't, feel free to ignore it all.  Just remember, if you choose to go into one of those discussions and you get blindsided by somebody -- you have been warned Image

As you can see in my subject, I'm new here!
Umm, how to start?
Well, I'm currently a second-year graduate student in trombone performance.
I go to a top 10-Music Conservatory.
I've been playing for 9 years, used to play flute.
Check out my profile to find out about my gear.
I'm adept at both Jazz and Classical but enjoy playing Jazz more!
I can also play alto trombone and get a sound out of alto sackbut, although I doubt I'd be that good now since I've had quite a hiatus.
I try to be a jack of all trades and uninhibited when it comes to versatility among different genres of music.
I guess that's it. I love music and my trombone AND Musicology (I intend on pursuing my Doctorate in that) so, yeh.
That a good enough intro?

Actually, it is not as big a change as people might think...
The embouchure is virtually the same, just a little more pursed on flute.
And then, no transposition is necessary, just a clef change from treble to bass.
I struggled with that quite a bit because I did not even know other clefs existed but once I got it, learning tenor and alto clefs was a breeze. It took about 2 days (per each clef) of regimental study to learn those.

Anyway, the reason for my switch was that I wanted to be in the Marching Band at my high school. There was a quota for flutes in the band which had already been met and since I didn't play piccolo, I needed to either learn or play something else.
The band was strapped for low brass (like always) so my director gave me the option of trombone or marching baritone.
I chose trombone because I remembered this old Donald Duck cartoon in which Pete was enraging the Gods with his unwieldy squawking on the trombone. The Gods gave Donald the power of electricity to shock Pete and inevitably make his stop the raucous.
I actually found the video on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32r_iocHV3E
So, that is the video that inspired my choice. I always loved the trombone...and it was because I saw this cartoon as a kid, haha!
How many people can say that?

Welcome back, Griffin.

We were wondering why you left.

Part of growing up is learning how to apportion your time between things you need to do and things you like to do.  I can tell you this is a lifelong struggle.

I just have a simple request that people identify themselves with at least their first name.

I feel uncomfortable replying to tromboneyadayada or jazzyadayada.

Thanks & WELCOME newbies!!

Eric

Thanks Eric!

Yes, I've requested the same thing in the past. Although I can understand the need for some anonymity on the open internet, it's much friendier if we can at least be on first name terms on this forum.

Welcome to all new members, including those who haven't yet introduced themselves.... *hint*

Hi Greg.

Welcome to the 12-step Trombone Withdrawal Program...  Oops, I mean the Trombone Discussion Forum.

Note: there are a lot of us who own too many instruments.  I'd need to be a millipede with 20 mouths to be able to play all my gear!

Hi Greg. Image

Please could you put this information in your signature, for those of us with a memory problem?

Thanks!
