Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Bach 36: Warburton 7M (T4)
Conn 88H: Warburton 7D (Symphony T)
Conn 62H: Conn 3
In the 5+ decades I have been playing, I have not experimented with mouthpieces anywhere near what I see from many folks on this board. Varying mouthpieces across different sized horns, I do like to keep the rim size constant. I played Giardinelli 3M and 3D (screw-rims) for a long time, then moved to Wick (4BS) on my main axe, a Bach 36. Loved it, but at a time when I was not playing enough, endurance became an issue. I like that Warburtons offer so many choices, and screw-on backbores.
I have played the same Conn 3 mouthpiece on bass forever - it came with the horn. I cannot take a _big_ mouthpiece. Even a 2G makes me uncomfortable. When I see you peeps talking about your 1G's and 0AL's I start to hyperventilate!
Thanks for this thread. Interesting to see!

Small bore: Bach 7C - Not comfortable to play on need to change
Large Bore: Hammond 12ML
Large Bore: Hammond 12ML
I primarily played on any one of a few 5Gs I have owned up until I got my new horn earlier this year. I pulled the Hammond out of the drawer when I got it, and it just sounds and feels a lot better on that horn.

King 2103F/3BF: Benge 6.5AL or Bach 5G depending what I'm playing
Edwards T-350: Griego 5 NY blank
Getzen 1052FDR: Getzen 1 1/2 - I tried several different sizes and brands and ended up with the mp that came with the horn.

Seriously, where did all the AR Resonances go? Last year people couldn't stop putting pictures of those things on this forum.

I played one for a while, they’re very easy to play and are different to almost anything else I’ve tried, but I just prefer the sound I get with my MV 6.5a and Doug Elliot pieces.harrisonreed wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 5:17 pm Seriously, where did all the AR Resonances go? A few guys in my town still play them and sound great. I’m talking small bore here, I’m not sure if his large tenor and bass pieces really took off.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
I got a chance to check out all the bass pieces at a festival last year. The smaller stuff may have been good, but he didn't have anything very large, deep, or open (i'm talking even a 1.25 size cup depth). That's probably a big old portion of the market left out.

This is what I've found works best with my face and preferred horns right now. I feel like there's still room for improvement but I'm not in a position to go on a wild goose chase looking for the "perfect" mouthpiece for every horn I have...

Navigating my way to a Doug Elliot Mouthpiece. Got a XT 103 rim I love and now trying to decide if a D cup is too big and if I should go C or C+. Not yet got the two Cs.

Since posting this I realized the 0AL was a little too big for me. I've settled in on a 1AL. Time will tell.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
I did play one on my bass for some time. Very easy to play fast response. But does not make it easy to blend with a section where all the players played "normal" mpc. It have a tendency to sound nasty.harrisonreed wrote: ↑Tue Jul 07, 2020 5:17 pm Seriously, where did all the AR Resonances go? Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
My setups are a little small all the way around (even on tuba), but it works for me.
Bass - Schilke Reichenbach (gold) (in between a Schilke 58 & 59) for everything except orchestral, Ferguson L (gold) (about the same as a Schilke 59 rim with a 60 cup) for orchestral
Large tenor - Elliott 100G/G8 (equivalent to a Bach 6.5 rim with a 4G cup)
Medium tenor - Elliott MT100G/D4 (equivalent to a Bach 6.5)
Small tenor - Elliott 95G/B2 (equivalent to a Bach 17)
Bass - Schilke Reichenbach (gold) (in between a Schilke 58 & 59) for everything except orchestral, Ferguson L (gold) (about the same as a Schilke 59 rim with a 60 cup) for orchestral

Small Bore Tenor: Hammond 12 S
Large Bore Tenor: Hammond 12 ML
Euphonium: Hammond 12 XL
Bass: Bach 2G, but I haven't played bass in years.
Basically, I found a rim that I like and just adjust the cup/shank size for each use case. I used to use a Bach 4G and later a Wick Heritage 4 AL on everything (I'm more of a euphonium player by trade and education), which honestly worked well enough. A slightly smaller cup size on trombone helped me get away from the whole 'slide euphonium' sound concept.

Hi Everyone,
Just thought I would say thanks for responding so far. Interesting to see what people are using. I personally have recently bought some new mouthpieces for the first time in about 7 years and the following will be the set ups for the next month or so:
Shires Bass: Schilke 59 or Hammond 21BXL
Shires Tenor: Lindberg 4CL
Bach 42BOG: Wick 4.5AL
Conn 18H: Schilke 51D or Yamaha 48
Hope you are all well.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
For me, it's all Hammond stuff:
Alto: 10S
525/547 tenor: 10MXL
547 tenor: 10ML
Bass: 21BXL with enlarged throat and backbore
Yes, I've tried smaller rims on alto, and I sound worse. I have tried smaller pieces on all horns, actually, and I sound and feel best on these.

.508: Yamaha Nils Landgren
.525: Yamaha 48
.547: don't play much anymore, but when I was, I was using a Yamaha 51C4. If I pulled it out tomorrow, I would probably just put the 48 in it.
(basically, now that there is no band, I am playing the .508 with the Nils Landgren pretty much exclusively. Sometimes I stick the 48 in there, and that works well, but the horn and I are both just a little more musical with the Nils Landgren)

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Oh boy. This is a somewhat loaded question.
For Alto Trombone and Jazz Tenor, I use a Bach 7C, 6 3/4C, and a Ferguson 11C, which are all about the same size.
For regular tenor, I use mouthpieces that are roughly an old Bach 4G size, with a smaller cup. These include a Laskey 59MD, a Hammond 11ML, a Hammond 11L, and a Ferguson B-series 4G-5G
For Bass Trombone, my current main squeeze is a Ferguson L, based on a Minick L. I also use a Laskey 85MD, and have a Ferguson JR and LS that I use.

Tenor: Hammond 10ML, MXL...and for bass on tenor, a Yamaha 58.
Bass: Hammond 20BL and a Benge 59. As Chad Arnow indicated prior, the small 3 / big 4 rim diameter size suits me best on tenor, although I do keep a Faxx 4G (old-sized Bach) and 6.5AL in the closet.

36B - Elliott 98/E
42BO - 98/F/F* - I just tried Doug`s new F* backbore - WOW !!!! great Sound.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
I'm experimenting using my single-trigger bass as a multi-purpose tenor and bass - both with a Bach 3G mpc. For what I want to do, it seems to work well. Kinda nice to play a high ballad and then turn around and play a low ballad (or the same one down an octave) without having to switch horns and/or mpcs. Also kinda nice to do big octave jumps within a ballad. And Rochut really sings on it.
I was hesitant at first, but then I figured it's only me playing in my music studio and if Curtis Fuller & Slide Hampton could use a large tenor in public where others were using small tenors - why not experiment with taking it a step further.
OTOH, if I was going to do a multi-track, then I would want to get more timbre separation by using the "correct" equipment for each part.

Small Tenor: Bach 6.5AL (tried nearly everything out there, and I just always seem to go back to it)
Medium Tenor: Bach 5 and Bach 5GS
Large Tenor: Doug Elliott 104N/G/G8
Bass: Schilke 58 (I find my articulations on this one much better than my Bach 1.5G). I also have a bigger Doug Elliott I keep around for anytime our orchestra has a pops concert (hellooooooo, John Williams).

Bass: Schilke 58 (I find my articulations on this one much better than my Bach 1.5G). I also have a bigger Doug Elliott I keep around for anytime our orchestra has a pops concert (hellooooooo, John Williams).
Euph: Doug Elliott 104N/I/I8

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
I play the Symington 1.5. Have been a little back an forward on the Bach 1 1/2g Mt Vernon but they are in the same ballpark. Anyway, here is a little piece my daughter 9 years old demands me to play. An Elvis Presley song "Cant help falling in love" on the Symington 1.5. (She is an Elvis "fan") I admit its a little boring compared to Elvis ....
