I've been kinda takin a break from the bone this summer. Not too good I know but I haven't had a lesson since the beginning of June.
My valve section is getting repaired at the Shires factory. (Has been for like 3 weeks now)
I don't think I'm gonna switch teachers now. I only have 1 year of hs left and I've heard lots of good things about my teacher in the past. I think he's my best option right now. I can't really drive down to Houston although I know that would open up a lot of possibilities.

I'll be playing with my own band (excuse me whilst I quote the website)....

We aren't from the East Midlands, but I didn't think it was worth correcting them!

Hi, Rodolfo. Usually this kind of post goes in the "New Forum Members" thread, and maybe one of the Administrators can move it.
Please don't worry about your English. It's much better than my Portuguese.
By all means have a look around and see if we have answers to your questions. If you can't find exactly what you need, post a question. If you put it in the wrong place, don't worry. One of us will move it for you. Just please don't post the same question in several areas. One of our rules is that you can only put a question up once. The second one has to be a different question.
Tell us a little about where you play. Are you in a Street Band? Orchestra? Do you play a valve trombone or a slide trombone? We are all interested.
Above all else, have fun.

Hi All,
I've been really enjoying this forum, learning a ton as well!
Quick Biography... Born in Seattle, moved to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe now) Missonary station with Mom and Dad at 5, back to Seattle at 14, George Fox College in Oregon 1978 - 1980 (trombone performance major), married twice, widowed once, currently engaged. Occupations: Store floor cleaner, Security guard, Video Arcade manager, Stripper, and for the past 15 years, Computer Technician, working for the Oregon Department of Education. Once I retire from ODE, I intend to work on trombones as a hobby, supplimental income.
Musical Background: Mom was classically trained vocalist. Her Uncle, Carleton Booth, was a well recorded tenor in the 40s, music director for the Billy Graham Crusade for a number of years. Mom always had great music around, playing. Sang in various choirs and ensembles through high school. Casually played guitar, no band instruments. Saw Bill Pearce play the trombone live at my sister's college in 1977 and decided that I HAD to do that!
Quit playing about 2 years after college... didn't know about community band scene... just focused on church stuff which was few and far between... practicing in an apartment didn't work since I didn't know about practice mutes either.. Finally and sadly sold my King 3b. 25 years later got a beautiful 1937 Olds Super from Ebay, started playing again.
Currently happily playing with the following:
Keizer Concert Band, Keizer Big Band, Marion County Community Band, Willamette Valley Concert Band, Salem Pops Orchestra, Celebration Brass Sextet, and various wedding and other impromptu groups.

Hee hee... I wondered if anyone would notice... Well, my second wife was an "exotic dancer", and she got me to do a few shows as well. Though it was fun, and I'm glad I tried it, I decided that it wasn't a profession for me, it was far more nerve-wracking than fun. Girls as an audience are far crazier than guys, BTW!!!

There are a few threads on "playing jazz". I don't have the time to do a search for you (thinking your English may not give you what you are looking for). Look for a link in our Links section for a Jazz Improvisation series (probably under Education).
One place to go and listen is a site called
Red Hot Jazz. There are recordings of many of the great American players from 100 to 75 years ago. Especially look for trombonists like Kid Ory, Eddie Edwards (part of the Original Dixieland Jass Band), George Brunies, Miff Mole, and Jack Teagarden.
When RedHotMama gets back from the Bude Jazz Festival, she might chime in with more info. Also, send a PM to Forum Member Graham Martin, who plays a lot of Dixieland (they call it Trad) in Australia.

Hi everyone. I just joined the forum this week and it seems like a really nice group of folks. It's great to have a place to hear what everyone's chatting about in the trombone world.
As far as bio information, it's all on my myspace page and websites...don't want to bore anyone by repeating stuff. The short version is that I'm originally from Pittsburgh and have lived in NYC since '92. I'm a freelance player and play mostly broadway shows but over the years have worked with folks like Maria Schneider, Barry White, Aretha Franklin and most recently Deborah Gibson and Steely Dan. Have also been fortunate enough to record a number of solo/duo records as well.
Looking forward to chatting with old friends and meeting new ones. All the best to everyone!

Hey Everyone. I joined up to the forum several years ago, but its been a long while since I last accessed the forum. This was mainly due to workload and my busy band schedule. So, just adding another post to say hello (again) and that I'm back!
Just a refresher: I play a Bach Strad 50B30 Bass Trom, with a Schilke 59 mouthpiece. I have played with the Bundaberg Municipal Band since 1995.

Hello, all. I already made a small post of introduction in another thread, but I might as well drop one here as well.
I'm a long-time lurker on this site, but for reasons unknown I only just joined recently. I'm a broad area music major in the University of Wisconsin system (I'm kind of between campuses at the moment) purely for the enjoyment of playing. I haven't really thought through whether I'd like to play or teach (or both), so right now getting a music degree is just for the sake of getting it. I am an avid lead player in the big band setup, though my improv skills certainly leave a lot to be desired. My legit chops are ever-improving, and with the help of my prof I'm gradually sifting the scoops and tongue-stops out of the Morceau Symphonique. This place is certainly an active and supportive community, and I anticipate being around quite frequently.
And for the record, my username does in fact indicate the horn I play. My axe was the find of the decade on eBay: it's an all-original King 2B Silvertone whose serial number (21xxxx) dates to around 1938. The slide is a solid 9.5 out of 10, and the sound and control across the board are unbelievable. It came with its original M21 mouthpiece, and the combination is one the likes of which I have never encountered in any other setup I've tried. I also have the good fortune of playing a school-owned Elkhart 88H which my university bought new in the early 60s. I am not eager to return that horn at the end of the semester, and I'll be in the market for one as soon as my (extremely meager) finances allow.

Thanks, and of course! haha, the two actually go together fairly well because I'm attracted to the two for similar reasons. There's just not a lot of work right now for specifically music journalists. I'd like to gen more into the political side of things and experiment. Who knows. I'm looking forward to it

Hey!
I am dtkeith, high school aged trombonist (along with others) from Cincinnati, Ohio. My personal horn is a Conn 88H, and I also play my school's bass trombone in jazz ensemble and concert band. I found this forum looking for sheet music online (reel big fish to be specific), and I am so glad I found this site. Looks like a great resource, and a great place to kick back and network with other trombonists. I also enjoy drumming, and I am on my school's winter drumline.

I'm a newbie here.
I'm from Wisconsin, (we just got 11 inches of new snow today), and play an old Couesnon valve trombone, after being away from it for too many years.
I have had two valve trombones that I owned, after playing the baritone horn in school. I don't remember what brand my first was, but when I lost interest in playing and times were tough, I took it to a pawn shop. Sometime later, I asked who had bought my trombone and was told "Jabbo Smith", an old Milwaukee jazz musician. My wife later bought me the Couesnon that I currently own as a surprise birthday present, and I started to play again. Some years later, I became friends with a local dentist that I met in a scuba diving club. We became great friends and when he found out that I played the valve trombone, he told me that he once fixed the teeth of "Jabbo Smith", so that he could play the valve trombone!! Small world huh? I later participated with my friend in many traditional jazz events in the MidWest. In recent years, we have been going to an annual 3-day, weekend jazz jubilee in honor of Bunny Berigan. Muscians from around the country come to Fox Lake , Wisconsin (Bunny's home) to honor him Last May was the 100th anniversary of his death. It is a great time. I also found that Bunny's newphew, Kaye Berigan, plays weekly in Milwaukee with The All Star Super Band, and conicidently, he was the band that played at my daughter's wedding, 13 years ago. Wierd, how things happen.
I am a grandfather, with two chidren and three grandchildren. I am a retired accountant and current do Web site development in my spare time.

I look forward to getting to know you all in the coming months! Thanks!!

Hello, and welcome.
Wow, a Jabbo Smith connection! What an absolutely amazing trumpet (and trombone) player. My own classic jazz band plays a few of his numbers, such as Michigander Blues, Crooning the Blues, Little Willie Blues (we tried Jazz Battle at one time, but it was just a bit too tricky

). My trumpet player and I were in Chicago in 1999, playing at a Bix Beiderbecke jazz festival and a few other venues, and we met a really old lady hauling an oxygen cylinder. She wheezed, "Do you know any of those Jay-bo Smith numbers? I was his girlfriend. Well, one of them...."

I don't think they called him Jabbo for nothing!
For those of you who don't know him, here's my usual link....

hey! I posted this a couple days ago in another forum since I didn't see this handy new member sticky. Silly me! Anyway, here it is reposted.
I'm new around here so I thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Liz and I live in San Diego. I've been playing brass instruments *COUGH* for 30 years now. Started with trombone, switched to trumpet, got braces in high school and went over to the euphonium. I went to college for a couple of years as a euph performance major (yes, this is the lucrative career move you're all imagining) and after college I played in a really good wind ensemble in the Denver area for a number of years. Euph was pretty much all I did up until last year when I decided to pursue the trombone again. I played on a borrowed Benge for a few months and then purchased a lovely Kanstul 1588. These days I'm getting more calls for my trombone skills, such as they are, than I am for euphonium. Most recently I've been playing with two different orchestras here in San Diego as well as a wind ensemble.
I look forward to participating in this forum!

Hi, Newbass, and Welcome
I notice you have been asking questions. That's what we are here for. If somebody else asks a question you know the answer to, please feel free to answer.
Make sure you read the Terms of Use.
We don't allow horseplay, especially in the Content areas, but the Practice Break is a little less formal. Also, if you want to say something negative about someone or something, please be specific. Saying "Bruce Guttman is an awful player" is not nice. Saying "Bruce Guttman is an awful player because he can't play 'Carnival of Venice' with all the variations" is a little more reasonable.

It was kind of half nerves, and half not being prepared. Plus, there was a chance that if I was able to get in to this particular all-district thing, then another chance was gonna go by, a state governor's school program over the summer, which had its' audition RIGHT on the concert for the all-district thing.

I started trombone (the ONLY instrument I desired) in 7th grade when my sister came home with a permission slip to join band in 4th grade. I had wanted to play for a long time and I guess my mom decided it wouldn't be fair to let my sister play and not me. I played until 1973 (my 3rd year of college-majoring in music ed) then dropped out of CMU and got a job. Didn't really want to teach music and didn't have the nerve to play recitals to get that performance degree so I left my trombone days behind. I would have loved to play in some sort of community band through the years but I worked afternoon shifts and couldn't attend rehearsals. I sat 1st chair in concert band through junior, high school, and college and would have been in CMU's wind ensemble if my private lesson teacher in high school hadn't convinced my mom I couldn't "handle" the Conn 88h. The 88h was the trombone required in order to be in the wind ensemble and my mom got me a Conn 79h for college. Therefore, I could only be in concert band.... Anyway, to make a long story short, I retired last January and moved from Michigan to Tennessee and the community I live in is starting a community band!! I'm starting back on my old Conn 79h (tomorrow) after nearly 36 years and am sooooo excited about it (and nervous). I've been trying to get my wind and embouchure back. I hope my high notes come back because I really would like to continue playing 1st chair parts. Since this is a brand new band I don't know if they'll have auditions or not and don't know how many trombonists will show up. By the way I was the first female trombonist in my town and many more girls took it up after seeing me in the band!

Welcome to the Forum, sundancer! I didn't realize, though, that Tennessee was formerly Michigan. I was certain they had always been different states.
Yeah, I know it means that you used to live in MI and now live in TN. My mother was born and raised in Jackson, MI, and my wife was born and raised in Memphis, TN, (which, by the way, is near Jackson, TN) so I have connections to both of your states. Two of our three children were also born in Memphis and all three were mostly raised there until we moved to Oregon. And my wife and I both play trombone, so there's even more of a connection with you. Hope you enjoy the Forum, learn a lot, and share your knowledge and experiences with us.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here and I'm returning to the horn after being away for a while. I graduated with a music ed degree almost 20 years ago. Taught one year in public schools and embarked on my second career. I went to law school at Arizona State (and played in the symphonic band while there, lawyer hating flame suit donned). I work now for a regional health consortium in Alaska where I grew up.
I have an Abilene Conn 88H that I'm extremely attached too. I thought about getting a nice shiny new horn or suitable vintage horn, but mine plays and sounds great and is all the horn that I think that I can handle. I dabbled in doubling on bass bone in college and had a 50B3--after college I traded it in for a Fender Stratocaster (AKA as my Jimmi Hendrix wannabe days, good times). Besides this post, my first posts were in the Food and Drink section (what does that say about me?). I've been digging this site since I stumbled across it and have seen some old friends posting here and folks that know friends of mine. (Wade, bass bone player in Seattle, lived on the same street as I did while in high school and we, obviously, played together in h.s.; and Ben Griffin plays in the Coast Guard Band with a college school mate of mine (Vince Y).
. . . Love the community here and hope to fit in while I rediscover my horn and wish something as cool as the internet was around when I was in school . . .
Just Ken.
