It looks like the San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas are making a series of these kinds of full-length video documentaries, with this approach of a combination of simple biographical history and music appreciation. Well-produced, and well worth sharing.

Saw a date of 2009 in one of them - so, these aren't all recent. But, being recently downloaded to Youtube, at least.

Yes, they have been around for a while, but they are all fantastic! I like the Shostakovitch but The Copland, Berlioz, Beethoven, Ives, Stravinsky, and Mahler are all great too!

These videos are great. I just saw one on Mahler's First Symphony and recommended it to the members of our community orchestra, which is scheduled to perform the work in October - that is if there is a 2020 season.

I loved the Mahler one - it brings the music (even more) to life!
There's a companion website which is interactive. Unfortunately it uses Flash, so you have to enable that, and it will be disabled by Chrome at the end of this year. But that is still 5 months more of exploration!
