What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
So, I haven't bought a new bass mouthpiece in about 7 years or a new tenor in about 10 years. Was bored, so I tried all my bass mouthpieces and found one that I might like more than my current, which got me thinking about what is new out there or commonly used now. After talking to some friends I was surprised how many more options there are now! Just curious to see what everyone is using?
Me
Tenor: Hammond 11ML
Bass: Doug Yeo, or Hammond 21BXL
Again, just curious to see what people are using these days.

I'm old school.
Small bore tenors (including sub-.500 peashooter): DE LT101/LTD/D3 (Bach 5 as backup as it is close in specs)
Large bore tenor: Bach 5G
Bass: Bach 1.5G

Tenor: DE XT 102 rim, G* cup, G8 or H8 shank
Bass: DE LT 112 rim, K cup and K8 shank, sometimes an L cup and L8 shank
I’m getting too old and I don’t play enough to keep up with bigger equipment. And, referencing a different thread, I’m keeping it simply and going smaller and lighter. It’s easier to get a big, clear trombone sound on smaller equipment rather than trying to make big equipment sound small. It just ends up sounding woofy.

At the moment, subject to change...
small tenor: quite a good Bach 6.5AL
large tenor: Ultimate Brass SMP. Only had a week on it so far
bass: Yamaha Yeo. Current horn is not jiving with my larger stuff, and it works. Not the sound I have in my head.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
I'm currently using all Doug Elliott setups with Lexan rims (nickel allergy). I do have two Symington bass pieces in ZR which I hope to play again some day...
Small tenor: XT104 lexan rim, XTC+ cup, D2 shank
Large tenor: XT104 lexan rim, XTF* cup, F8 shank ; XT104 lexan rim, XTF* cup, F4 shank
Euph: XT 104 lexan rim, XTF* cup, F8 shank (I dig small pieces for Euph, I like the old school Brass Band sound)
Bass: LB114 lexan rim, LBM* cup, M8 shank ; XB114 lexan rim, XBM lightweight cup, M8 shank ; older LB114 lexan rim, LBM cup, M8 shank
Contra: CB118(?) rim, CBP cup, P8 shank. I have a contra setup and no contra haha. It'll come in handy one day.
Symington stuff... 1.5 in ZR and 2 in ZR. I adore my Symington pieces and plan to use them again at some point.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Small tenor (lead): Warburton 8S/4* 2-piece. Very shallow cup, Bach 4G-sized rim.
Small tenor (all-around): Hammond 13M, or at least it will be again if I can ever find it.
Large tenor: Hammond 12ML. I would use my Warburton 7ST/3* (3G-size) but my 88H doesn't play nice with it.
Bass: Warburton 2B/3* (Schilke 60-sized).

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Alto(s): Ferguson 11 and sometimes Yamaha 46B
Small tenor: Not really settled - currently Ferguson 11
Medium tenor: Not really settled - sometimes Yamaha Nils Landgren
Large American tenor: Ferguson 2
Large German tenor: Yamaha Alain Trudel - I know this is not very conventional, but it works well (probably due to the narrow backbore)
Bass: Ferguson L
However I am currently working on a set/small line of new mouthpieces with a well respected mouthpiece maker which will affect these choices.
I am pretty sure this may be interesting for others as well, so will keep anybody posted who wants to know.

Bass: Greg Black 1/4G, .312 #2
Large Tenor: Greg Black 3.5
Small Tenor: Schilke 51D
I was constantly switching mouthpieces on bass (my main horn) for the last few years and had a new piece at least every week but when I came across Greg Black pieces, I found out they fit great for me. Went through a few and settled on my current one which works great for me. I love the equipment side of music so finding a mouthpiece that worked well with no complaints was a relief after years of searching.

Just curious. What is the purpose of skeletonizing a Megatone? Couldn't you just have skeleyonized a regular 7C?dukesboneman wrote: ↑Mon May 25, 2020 8:35 am Alto - Skeletonized Bach Megatone 7C

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
BGuttman,
It was an experiment. I liked the bigger back bore and rim feel.
But wondered how it would play with less metal than a Megatone but more than a standard 7C
I`m happy with the results.
Left - Regular Megatone
Right - Modified Megatone

A Josef Klier 8D, JK 7D, JK 7E, and the m/p that came with my Kuhnl Bart van Lier tbn, which looks like its based on based on a JK 8E, but with an opened out throat and a IMO opinion a less comfortable rim.
All other mouthpieces have been moved on, and my current fave with the Kuhnl 480/88" BZ is the JK 8E..

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Small Bore horn: Conn 2 from the early 1970's, it cost me twelve bucks, sounds decent, and the high notes pop out well.
Large Bore: Bach 5G, I think it's pretty good
Bass Trombone: Bach 1 1/2G, I have a 1G but it's too big for me.
Baritone: Bach 6 1/2 AL. It's what I have and gets the job done.
I also have an old Roth and a Holton 12C, but the Roth has the oversized Reynolds shank, and the Holton makes everything really sharp and the low notes don't come out well.

Large bore: Bach 5GB (I only play large bore, I’m a high schooler)
The beauty of the 5GB is you still retain that 5G “stableness” but with less metal on your face.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Small tenor: It depends on the job at hand...
Small(er) group works? CKB 7C
Big band? Bach 5 (3rd book is pretty flexible in range)
Large tenor: Bach 5GS. I chose a shallower mouthpiece for extra clarity. I do want to try a 5GL, or maybe a normal 5G for extra separation from the above 5...
I don't jive with the Holton 89 my 168 came with, which i presume is the original mouthpiece. Too wide inside and not enough bite.
Bass: Schilke 58, long shank. I also have a short shank 58 and a Wick 1AL, the rim of which is a bit too flat in contour for me.

Yamaha Douglas Yeo and 60BL for bass (and tuba!). The latter is for when I want to play high for an extended period of time.
I used to have Yamaha 53DL and Bach 3G for tenor, but right now I lend them to students in the school band.
Lastly, Wessex 3 for tenorhorn and rotary bass trumpet.

Re: What tenor and bass mouthpieces are you using?
Bass - Marcinkiewicz 1 Concert Hall
Eb Tuba - Marcinkiewicz 106 or DE LB110, P Cup, Tuba Shank
Large Bore - Marcinkiewicz 3 or 5F
Small Bore - Marcinkiewicz 5F or 6 1/2AL
I mostly play bass or tuba. So not always decided on the Large and Small Bore. Mouthpiece choice sometimes depends on what I am playing and what sound is needed. I am worthless on anything much smaller then a 6 1/2AL.

I just switched my bass to a Denis Wick 1AL. 0AL was a little to big for me.
