Doug Elliott Stuck Thread

Hi all! I got a new Doug Elliott mouthpiece yesterday and I’m loving it! I ran into one problem, I’m not able to undo my shank and cup. It was unscrewing when I took the mouthpiece out of my horn, and it looks like I tightened it a little too much. Any tips on getting them undone safely? Thinking about getting some rubber strap wrenches.

I have a pair of these that are in my "gig" bag wherever I go. Incredibly handy for stuck DE pieces, lock nuts, bending levers, what have you.

Oh awesome! And they don’t warp/scratch the brass shank?

I have an AR resonance mouthpiece where the shank is threaded to the cup. I use jaw pliers (?) and a strap wrench. Really any kind of rubber to protect the mouthpiece will do it

I put instructions on the old forum. I'll see if it's accessible to link. Otherwise I post it here in a bit.

Awesome, thanks a bunch Doug! Is there anything I could put between the wrench and the shank to protect it? Also, how should I hold the cup while I’m tapping the wrench on the shank?

If you use a wrench that fits, it doesn"t need any protection. NEVER use pliers or vice-grips or anything like that. NEVER.....
Just hold the mouthpiece in your hand. The impact on the OTHER end of the wrench will loosen it.
Rawhide or wood to loosen the rim. Again, just hold the mouthpiece in your hand.

Will do, thanks Doug!
