It's been a Conn 5G for a long time. Not sure if that's changed.

I got a Conn 1.5G with mine, but I think that was factory error.

Mine came with a Conn 5G. On a fact finding mission about its specs, I contacted Conn. The rep told me (at the time), that they weren't sure of the specs and that future horns would ship with a Bach 5G. So, either way, expect something 5Gish

The Conn 5G I got seemed awfully deep, like a 2G with a 5G rim

Agreed, it's definitely bigger than the Bach. I can't say it sounded bad with the horn though.harrisonreed wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 6:52 am The Conn 5G I got seemed awfully deep, like a 2G with a 5G rim

Re: What mpc comes with a new 88H?
I was recently apprised of the following from Conn-Selmer:
The Bach 42 comes with a Bach 6½ AL, Conn 88 comes with a Bach 5G, and the King 4B comes with a Bach 6½ AL.

Interesting that the 88H comes with the 5G instead of a 6 1/2AL. Of course they really should send them with a Bach 6 1/2 A, which is a better match for the leadpipe, IMHO.

Re: What mpc comes with a new 88H?
I got my .547 out for the first time since March 2020 and I went through my 5G-sized mpcs to find something suitable. I settled on a Conn 5G in preference to a Bach 5G and a 5GL.
It must have come with a horn that passed through. It doesn’t look like you can buy one by itself. At least, it wasn’t advertised by Hickey, Mpc Express or Dillons.
I quite like it.

Re: What mpc comes with a new 88H?
I don't know whether it's changed with time, but I've seen 88Hs shipped with either Bach 5G or Conn 5G. Recent listings from Conn-Selmer specify Conn 5G for both 88H (closed wrap) and 88H) (open wrap). Both trombones still have fixed leadpipes.
I played my 88H for several years with a Bach 6½AL (fashionable at the time), but found better results when I eventually switched to a Schilke 51 (~Bach 5G-sized). I'm surprised that the Bach 42 comes with a 6½A (per Conn-Selmer). For me, a slightly larger cup is a better match.
I wonder how many of those who purchase a new 88H end up using the factory mouthpiece?

They have shipped Bach 42 horns with 6 1/2AL mouthpieces for decades. Most large bore horns come with one, or a 5G size piece.Posaunus wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 11:28 am I played my 88H for several years with a Bach 6½AL (fashionable at the time), but found better results when I eventually switched to a Schilke 51 (~Bach 5G-sized). At least with my Kanstul horns, they were 6 1/2AL mouthpieces with a backbore for a .547 horn.
The Bach large shank 6 1/2AL is literally the small shank version with a thicker shank wall, which is a .261" "G" throat with a #420 backbore. Their 6 1/2A mouthpiece, on the other hand, has a smaller throat in small shank, but the large shank has a .276" throat with the same #429 back bore as a 5G.

Right you are. The larger-throat/backbore Bach 6½A (now supplied with the Bach 42) seems to be to be a better match to a 0.547" bore trombone than the smaller-backbore 6½AL that used to provide. And for me, a little larger-yet (e.g. 5G-size) is even better.tbonesullivan wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 12:25 pm The Bach large shank 6 1/2AL is literally the small shank version with a thicker shank wall, which is a .261" "G" throat with a #420 backbore. When I got an 88HYCL back in Fall of 2000, mine came with a gold plated 4CL.

Re: What mpc comes with a new 88H?
As another data point, my 1972 Bach 42B came new with a large shank Bach 6 1/2 A. At the time, "the" mouthpiece to use was a Schilke 51 (no letter), and I still have that too with no mods.
I do not believe Bach ever shipped a 6 1/2 AL with the 42. Apparently, the AL & A are different.

Re: What mpc comes with a new 88H?
In 1971 my 42B came with a 4G mouthpiece.
At college that year I took lessons from the grad student and he had me buy a 6 1/2AL. I'm not sure I knew mouthpieces came in different sizes. I played that many years, making occasional unsuccessful attempts to get a 5G to work because "everybody" said that was the right fit.
After a lesson from Doug I went back to the original 4G and have stayed there. Not that I play that horn much anymore, but when I do.

I bought a new 42B in 1978 and I’m pretty sure it came with a 6 and 1/2AL. I had been playing a 2B with a Benge 12C. It required an adjustment.

That isn't a hard and fast rule. They used to. When I bought mine (actually just sold it in Tokyo last night ... ... ), It came with a Conn 5G.
