Hand reamed Bach 7C

For many years I played a Bach 7C that I had drilled out to .250. Then later I had a different one opened up by hand.

But for several years now I’ve spent most of my time on the under appreciated Bach 6 3/4C (on Conn 6H)

Lately I’ve been going back to the 7C. I find my upper register to be a bit more consistent.

My question is this. Is there a mouthpiece from a different manufacturer that would be similar in spec to an opened up 7C? I’ve tried the Greg Black 7C…much different, but I love the quality of his m’pieces.

Greg,

You may want to check out the Marcinkiewicz ET4 (Lloyd Ulyate) - supposedly based on Lloyd's opened-up Bach 7C. The ET4 Throat is 6.25mm (0.246"), and I find the Rim to be quite comfortable. Worth checking out.

I was also going to suggest the ET4 Lloyd.

Also, the Warburton Whitfield Model.

Good mouthpieces. But their throats are all smaller than the 0.250" diameter that Greg is looking for. (As is Schilke's new Alex Iles Signature Mouthpiece - sort of an oversized Schilke 47B.)

Maybe try Bach 7c Megatone?

If you are open to trying an off-the-shelf 7C from Bach, you can work with a shop like Osmun or Dillon to take an off the shelf piece and open it up at their shop. I’ve done this to a few Bach 5G’s and Osmun charged me $10 + the cost of the mouthpiece.

It might be an economical way to experiment, even if you ultimately settle on a different brand or full custom mouthpiece. Of course build quality and dimensions on Bach pieces of the same size can vary.

DE MT 98 rim with a #2 backbore

MT Series
MT series: Medium Tenor trombone rim sizes
for small bore trombones and alto trombones
The MT series has a general "feel" about like a 7C.
MT series mouthpieces have a bigger sound than the ST series, and easier high range than the LT series.
