Been watching the Mary Tyler Moore show on youtube lately. I hear a bass trombone featured on all the little opening and closing clips in the soundtrack. It was a 1970s show and I wonder who was playing on all those, sounds great.

I think George Roberts played on many CBS shows so it's probably him.

Definitely could be George Roberts, but for some reason I'm thinking Kenny Shroyer was doing a good amount of that work, too.

That was one of the great TV shows of all time. Ted Baxter was one of the funniest characters ever.

One of the best TV show theme songs ever, IMHO. The show was one of the best, too. Great writing and innovative.
I don't know who was playing the bass 'bone licks, but I did notice a slight change in the lyrics between the first season and subsequent ones, it was no doubt deliberate and went along with Mary's character development.
"You just might make it after all" evolved into "You're gonna make it after all."

Back when good Saturday night TV was a thing, not the ratings purgatory it is now.

I think the Saturday-night line-up at my house was:

Lawrence Welk
Hee-Haw
Carol Burnet Show
Mary Tyler Moore Show
Bob Newhart Show

My parents heartily approved of each.

The theme was written and performed by Sonny Curtis. Pat Williams wrote the cues.

Thank you for the correction.

For most of its run, Hee Haw was in syndication. So it might've been on Sundays in your town, but not everywhere.
