Replacement "Side Handle" for 90s Yamaha Bass Trombone Case?

Post by tbonesullivan »

So, the "side handle" on my trusty Yamaha case has unfortunately broken. It is a cardboard reinforced faux leather strap with a metal spring inside, with two slots at the end where the screws go through. Well, that metal spring had one end snap through, and the other is half snapped through.

The part I think I would have needed is BX402167 SIDE HANDLE WITH SCREW BROWN, however the Yamaha parts catalog lists it as "ORDER STOP". I also found an old listing on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/252818679861

The strap itself is about 25mm wide and 21cm long. Anyone had any luck sourcing a replacement? I mean I could always get a piece of spring steel and see if I can make a replacement. I thought about grabbing an top handle from an amplifier or something similar, but those are 8.25in from screw to screw, and this is about 7 inches.

Seeing as those handles were probably the same ones used on tons of 90s Yamaha cases, I would assume that there has to be something out there that would work. Any ideas?

Can you post pictures of the case and the broken pieces?

Some repair shops have case parts saved - I know that my local tech keeps some handles and latches to use as replacements on school horn cases. I've also found some luggage repair places have an assortment of handles - a strap-type handle would be easy for them to create something.

A "strap handle" search on Amazon yields some promising hits. You could probably find something with the right screw spacing.

Here's a picture. I guess it wasn't really intended for long term use. I often tend to move cases around inside by the side handle and keep them up on their ends.

Get some metal strapping and drill some holes. Lumber store throws the stuff away. Reuse leather.

Anyone doing brick work near you? Brick is delivered in pallets wrapped in brick strapping, which looks a lot like what you have. There are always piles of scrap strapping littering the site.

I actually work at a warehouse and we have strapping, but it's too wide to fit inside the handle. I'd need to somehow shave off the edge without heating it up enough to ruin the tempering.

I asked for pictures because I thought I might have a handle that would fit (I've re-done cases and have a bagful of extra handles I've pulled of suitcases, etc.) but since I also have a similar case, I don't think either would work because the ends are too wide to fit under the brackets. Also, I was unable to undo the screw that holds the brackets on, it might require pulling the lining away from the inside.
Anyway, if you would like either of these handles, just pay me a few bucks for shipping from Trenton 08620.

Unfortunately they are too big / long. Those are handles for guitar amplifiers, which I have several of actually. My first thought was to check those, but they are just too long/ big. Thanks for the tip though!

You may have to remove those holders/brackets and start from scratch. If possible, I would recommend using T-nuts.
Here is a handle I added just using screws, it's held up for a few years but does not get moved too often just using the end handle.
