Osmun Music - A New Chapter

Post by Posaunus »

I received this message today:
========== ========== ========== ========== ==========
A New Chapter

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well. As I sit down to write this note, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey of Osmun Music—a journey that began nearly five decades ago in a small loft in Cambridge, shared with several flutemakers. From those beginnings, guided by a passion for craftsmanship and the community of musicians around us, we have grown into a company that serves brass players around the world.

The time has come for a new chapter. I am reaching out to share with you that I am considering selling Osmun Music this coming Summer, opening the door for new leadership to take our legacy forward. My intention is to ensure continuity in services and to make the transition seamless from all perspectives. The decision is been both exciting and bittersweet to me, but I am confident that fresh perspectives can only add to our story in the years to come.

Osmun Music comprises three core areas which may be purchased individually, or collectively:
  • Repair Services: The heart of our work for many has always been our dedicated and highly skilled repair services. Whether pulling a stuck mouthpiece or restoring an instrument to its former glory, this part of our business embodies our commitment to excellence. This component includes
.......... a. A well-established repair operation with a reputation for quality and expertise.
.......... b. National and local, loyal customer base
.......... c. Specialized tools and machinery which can be provided on request
  • Web Store: Our online store, offering a range of top-tier instruments, parts, and accessories, has allowed us to reach musicians far beyond New England. It’s a thriving platform with strong growth potential, especially for those ready to expand into new markets. This component includes:
.......... a. A thriving online platform offering instruments, accessories, and parts.
.......... b. The “Osmun.com” web address
.......... c. “Osmun” brand name trademark
.......... d. Defined opportunities for growth through digital marketing and expanded product lines.
  • Mouthpieces: Creating mouthpieces (Osmun brand stock and custom) has been a labor of love, crafted from years of experience and dedication to quality. Our custom work has brought musicians a tailored, personalized playing experience, and I’m excited to see how someone else might expand this unique offering. This component includes:
.......... a. Mouthpiece crafting operation (Osmun brand line and custom) with a loyal following among professionals and enthusiasts.
.......... b. Significant potential for scaling production or introducing new designs.
.......... c. Mechanical drawings and machining files for all stock mouthpieces as well as hundreds of custom models

If you or anyone you know may be interested in acquiring or merging any or all parts of Osmun Music, I would love to hear from you. This is a unique opportunity for someone to carry on the legacy of a well-respected business while bringing new ideas and energy into play. I am hopeful that Osmun Music’s next chapter will be written by someone with a passion for brass craftsmanship, and a desire to build upon our foundation of quality and service.

Thank you for your support over the years, and for being a part of the Osmun Music family. I look forward to connecting with those interested in exploring this new chapter for my business.

Please reply by email to: rosmun@osmun.com

Warm regards,
Bob Osmun

I really wish Bob well. He has earned his retirement. I first visited him when he had a storefront in Belmont MA selling Paxman horns, and Yamaha trumpets and trombones. At that time all the Boston Symphony brass players used his shop, as well as visiting soloists (I remember his talking about repairing Herman Baumann's horn that had a severe buildup of "green crud'"

Osmun was the go-to guy for critical repairs. He wasn't cheap, and the work was excellent.

Osmun alum Steve Shires is now building instruments in Vermont.

Osmun alum Jim Becker has opened a repair shop in Nashua, NH.

Wonder if Jim might be interested in taking the place over.

I had some work done in Nashua. They said Jim considered it, but wanted to live & work up there. Jim already has an excellent reputation, and I suppose doesn't need to buy the Osmun brand.

Wrong Jim...Becker is now working at the Yamaha Atelier in New York. Jim Engele now has his own shop in Nashua, where he and his team do fantastic work.

Ken Pope of Pope Instrument Repair, who is one of the biggest independent French horn dealers in the country, is also an Osmun alum.
